Overlanding is not a hobby.
It's a way of choosing how to live.
The Problem
The best campsites
were impossible to find.
Millions of acres of BLM land across Nevada, Utah, Oregon, and California are open for free dispersed camping. But the information to actually use them? Scattered across dead Reddit threads, gatekept in private groups, or simply missing.
Great campsites spread by word of mouth. Great overlanding routes stayed locked on someone's hard drive. We built CIWILD to change that.

CIWILD is a community platform for overlanders and free campers across the American West — covering BLM land from California to Oregon, Nevada basin routes, Eastern Sierra dispersed camping, and beyond.
CIWILD combines official land-manager information, community submissions, GPS records, and field notes where available. Each guide should explain its sources, review date, coordinate type, and whether field verification has been completed.
How We Build Guides
Clear sources. Clear status. No invented certainty.
Public-land conditions change, and not every regional guide represents a single campsite. CIWILD separates official-source review from community or field verification so readers can understand what supports each page.
Rules, closures, fees, permits, and official access information are checked against the responsible BLM, NPS, U.S. Forest Service, or local agency page.
Exact coordinates, regional reference points, community submissions, and field notes are identified rather than presented as the same type of verification.
Important guides include a review date and link to live official information that should be checked again before departure.

"I spent two weeks trying to find one free campsite in Nevada. That shouldn't be this hard."
It was a Friday evening in late October. Rita had just finished another week at her desk in Los Angeles and she was done — not burned out, just done with the noise. She threw a sleeping bag and a cooler into the back of her truck, pulled up directions pieced together from three different Reddit threads, and drove northeast toward the Nevada desert.
Six hours later, somewhere off a dirt road outside Tonopah, she found a flat piece of BLM land and parked. No signal. No other vehicles. Nothing for miles except sagebrush and the kind of silence that's hard to describe to someone who's only ever slept in cities. She made a fire, ate, and looked at the sky for a long time.
That part was perfect. Everything before it had been a mess.
She'd spent two weeks trying to find the spot — not this exact one, just any spot. Forum posts from 2019 with broken links. Instagram coordinates that led to private property. Facebook groups full of "DM me" replies that never came. The information existed. It was just buried, outdated, or gatekept.
On the drive back to LA, she kept thinking about how many people there must be — sitting at desks in cities, exhausted, wanting exactly what she'd wanted — who couldn't find a reliable way in. That was the beginning of CIWILD.
CIWILD is a community platform for overlanders and free campers in the American West, founded in Los Angeles. It covers dispersed camping across California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, and beyond through public-land research, regional guides, route planning, community contributions, and field notes where available.
Since launching, CIWILD has grown past single campsite listings. Some trips need more than one night figured out — so the team started mapping full multi-day routes: which campsites connect, where to fuel up, what's worth the detour, and what permits apply along the way. The first is a 3-day route through Nevada's Black Rock Desert, with more in progress across every state CIWILD covers.
