Free Dispersed Camping in Utah — CIWILD Guide
Free Dispersed Camping in Utah — CIWILD Guide
Utah is one of the best states in the American West for free dispersed camping, especially for overlanders, van travelers, rooftop tent campers, and weekend road-trippers. Much of the state includes BLM-managed public land, National Forest land, and remote desert routes where primitive camping may be allowed outside developed campgrounds. In general, BLM dispersed camping is limited to 14 days within a 28-day period, but local rules can vary by field office, recreation area, road corridor, and season. Popular areas near Moab, Zion, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Lake Powell, and Bears Ears may have designated campsites, restricted zones, sensitive cultural resources, or temporary closures. Campers should stay on existing roads, use previously disturbed sites, pack out all trash, avoid camping too close to water, and check current fire restrictions before lighting a stove or campfire. Utah’s desert landscapes are fragile, so responsible campsite selection is essential.
